The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
