Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
